Our Shared Story

Going to School

This is a story about going to school.
A new place.
A big step.
A brave beginning.

Sometimes, going to school feels exciting.
Sometimes it feels a little scary.
Both feelings are okay.

In the morning, I wake up.
The sun peeks through my window.
My blanket feels warm, and I give my body a big stretch.

Today is a school day.

I take a breath.
A deep one — in through my nose… and out through my mouth.
Just like I practiced.

I start my morning routine.

First, I get dressed.
Maybe I wear my favorite shirt.
Maybe I ask for help with socks.
Getting dressed is part of getting ready.

Then it’s time for breakfast.
Something warm and yummy helps me start the day.
Sometimes I feel too nervous to eat much. That’s okay too.

After breakfast, I brush my teeth.
Then I check my backpack.

My backpack has everything I need.

My lunchbox is inside.
My water bottle is filled.
My extra sweater is packed, just in case it’s chilly.

Sometimes, I tuck a special note or photo from home in my bag.
Something small that reminds me:
I am loved.
I am safe.
I am ready.

When it’s time to leave, I might feel a little flutter in my tummy.
That’s called being nervous.
Nervous feelings can come when we try something new.

I might ride in the car.
Or take the school bus.
Or walk with someone I love.

The world outside might feel loud or busy.
That’s okay.
I can hold a hand.
I can squeeze my fidget toy.
I can say, “I’m feeling a little nervous today.”

When I get to school, I see the building.
Big doors.
Colorful walls.
Children walking, talking, laughing.

Some are excited.
Some are quiet.
Just like me, everyone is doing their best.

Inside, a teacher is waiting.
The teacher smiles and says my name.
They are here to help me learn, play, and feel safe.

In my classroom, I see chairs and tables.
Books and crayons.
Blocks and puzzles.
Maybe there’s music playing or a calendar on the wall.

There’s a place for my backpack.
There’s a spot with my name.
This space is for me.

We start our day with a greeting.
Maybe we sing a welcome song.
Maybe we wave hello.
Maybe I just listen.

It’s okay to join in when I feel ready.
It’s okay to listen and watch.

During the day, we do all kinds of things.

We read stories about animals and adventures.
We learn letters and numbers.
We build tall towers with blocks.

Sometimes, we paint or use play dough.
Sometimes, we sit in a circle and take turns.

If I have a question, I can raise my hand.
If I need help, I can ask my teacher.
There are kind adults all around me.

There are also times for quiet.

We may listen to music.
We may rest.
We may take a break in a cozy corner if the classroom feels too loud.

If I feel overwhelmed, I can say:
“I need a break.”
Or “It’s too loud for me.”
And someone will help.

Later, it’s time for lunch.

I wash my hands and sit down.
I open my lunchbox.
Maybe I eat all my food. Maybe just a little.
That’s okay.

After lunch, we might go outside.

There are swings and slides.
There are games and balls and running feet.
I can play with others.
I can play alone.
I can try something new.
Or just watch.

Every choice is okay.

After playtime, we come back inside.
We calm our bodies.
We listen to another story.
Maybe we draw pictures of our favorite part of the day.

The teacher tells us when it’s almost time to go home.
That helps me feel ready.

I pack my things.
I say goodbye.

I did it.

At the end of the day, I might feel tired.
I might feel proud.
I might have big feelings about the day.

I can talk about them.
I can draw them.
I can hug someone I trust.

And I can remember:
I was brave.
I went to school.
And tomorrow, I can go again.

New things take time.
Feelings change.
But I am growing every day.

Step by step.
Story by story.
Day by day.
