Our Shared Story

When He Said Hello First

Arjun was brilliant.
He could solve a puzzle in seconds.
Name every planet in reverse order.
And remember exactly what we had for lunch three Tuesdays ago.

But he never said “hello.”

Not to family.
Not to friends.
Not even when they said it first.

It wasn’t defiance.
It was fear.
Fear that his words would come out wrong.
That his voice wouldn’t match the rhythm of the room.

So he stayed silent.
Even when he wanted to connect.

I watched him at birthday parties — standing near the gift table, clutching his toy, lips sealed.
His eyes begged to be part of the moment… but his voice wouldn’t follow.

We worked on it gently.
No pressure.
Just moments.
Scripts and stories.
One sentence at a time.

“Hi, I’m Arjun.”
“Hi.”
“Hello.”

We practiced in the mirror.
With stuffed animals.
Even with our dog.

But for months, nothing.
Then one day at therapy, his therapist greeted him like always:
“Hi, Arjun!”

And he paused.
Tilted his head.
Then softly, almost like a secret —
“Hi.”

It was barely audible.
But we all heard it.

And the world shifted.

From then on, it was like unlocking a door.
He didn’t swing it wide open — not yet.
But every now and then, he’d peek through.

He began greeting the mailman.
His teacher.
Even his cousin.

Each “hello” was a win.
A declaration:
I am here.
I want to connect.
And I’m not afraid to start.

Today, Arjun doesn’t greet everyone.
And that’s okay.
But when he does — it’s because he wants to.
Because he knows his voice is welcome.
Because he believes in its worth.
